Biography
Martin Allens' @la_belle_epoch work is inspired by an obsession with vintage bygone eras, historic racing cars and iconic planes, alongside
drawing and painting. He came to oil painting through a circuitous route, having drawn for most of his life and eventually being re-introduced
to painting as a preferred medium to create his work.
The methods used are classic ones, using layered paint applications rounded off by oil glazes. These create, add depth and harmonise colours.
In his work he aims to capture the exhilaration or thrill of the moment and translate that onto the canvas. The light and the colours are all in
the narrative, but he tries to present an ethereal dreamlike quality to the work, emphasising a fleeting, ephemeral heartbeat in time.
Last year some of his work was sold to one of the BP shipping collections. This year he took his car themed work to The London Classic Car show at Excel
in February and did well then followed up showing a new body of erotic work at Bargehouse Oxo Tower in April which was also well received.
More recently Martin is proud to have been selected as a finalist of the The London Art Biennale 2019, and has just made the final cut of Mall Galleries,
Royal Society of British Artists with one of his London inspired pieces. Currently there are rumours about a new exciting project in Soho – watch this space.
His next shows will be at Goodwood in September and The Truman Brewery towards the end of the year.
